I went out to lakies on
Saturday with the mountain caps still coated with the last remnants of the
recent snow. The fishing was pretty tough. We fished from the side rather than
taking float tubes out and I managed three rainbows and missed another one. It
seemed like as soon as I caught a fish on one fly, I might as well change it
because then I got nothing on it after that. All the fish were about a pound.
I started up near the
inlet and got one fish on a size 12 Black HB Nymph with a slow hand
twist retrieve over the reeds (about 50cm - 1m below a Strike
indicator). After that fish was landed, it went totally dead so I walked
across to the bank across from the hut and fished the drop off.
The water seems to
drop off rapidly and I lengthened the leader gradually, trying to pick
some snags on the bottom, but I got the flies down to about 14 feet and
still not hitting the bottom. I caught another fish at that depth on a
holographic buzzer so kept it at that depth, got one more take and then
nothing again.
I changed to a san juan
and again took a fish at about 14 feet down, this time fishing back up
to the inlet before getting to the weedy parts.
On the way back I
stopped at the inlet which was flowing fast and deep, so I had a few
casts for about 50m up into the stream, but nothing doing. I don't know
why the lakies rainbows don't go up there, but it was nice to have a few
downstream drifts in anticipation of the rivers opening at the beginning
of next month.
So that was it fish wise, but the other plus for
the day was how impressed I was with my new acquisition. I bought a
Vision 3zone 9'0" 6wt the day before and it handled beautifully. If
anyone is in the market for another rod, I'd suggest giving one of these
rods a cast the next time you're at a stockist. Two of the guys I was
fishing with on Saturday had bought the 3zone 5wt 10'0" during the week
and they were just as impressed with theirs as I was |
